Environmental OverviewAt Cadia Valley Operations (Cadia), Newcrest manages potential environmental impacts and risks through our Environmental Management Strategy (EMS). The EMS ensures that environmental management across site is planned, controlled, monitored, recorded and audited using tools and systems that drive continual improvement. The EMS integrates the Newcrest environmental policy, Newcrest environmental standards, identified impacts and risks and obligations at Cadia, and describes the way Newcrest manages identified environmental issues through objectives and targets, and the relationships of management plans, programs, procedures and other documents.
Each of the management plans and programs have been developed in consultation with relevant community groups, government agencies and departments, and are updated as required. Cadia has a team of environmental professionals that facilitate and coordinate the implementation of the EMS, ensuring the site meets all environmental performance requirements. The team is also responsible for environmental monitoring and communicating the results through to the community and workforce. A member of the team is available at all times through a dedicated hotline number, to respond to any environmental issues in a timely manner. The ongoing identification of environmental aspects and impacts is a key component of the Cadia EMS and in driving the continual improvement process. As a requirement of the Protection of the Environment Operations (POEO) Act and Regulation, Cadia has developed a Pollution Incident Response Management Plan (PIRMP). The PIRMP is a publicly accessible document that outlines Cadia's understanding of potential pollution events and its resources and processes to address such an event. If an emergency pollution incident occurs that threatens the health and safety of humans or the environment, the PIRMP will be used in conjunction with the Cadia Crisis Management and Recovery Plan and Emergency Management Plan. A full version of the PIRMP is available at Cadia and is readily available upon request to any authorised officers or other persons responsible for implementing the plan. A public summary of the Pollution Incident Response Management Plan (PIRMP) for Cadia is provided in the report below. It contains; · Contact details and procedures for contacting authorities · Mechanisms for communicating with the community · Mechanisms to minimise the risks to human health
